Richard and Corinne have moved to the countryside, far away from the
big city of London, the filth, the noise and the problems. One evening
Richard brings home an unconscious girl, Rebecca, whom he claims to
have found on the roadside while making his rounds as a country doctor.
Quickly, Corinne notices little inconsistencies, into which her husband
gets caught up. Everyday conversation becomes a duel. Both keep a
watchful eye on the other, waiting for the moment that the adversary
makes his first mistake. When Corinne then encounters Rebecca, Rebecca
reveals an enlightening truth to her. The rural idyll is deceptive, but
its appearance is seductive.
Englishman Martin Crimp, born in 1956, has already been introduced in Leipzig with »Attempts on her Life« and »Der Handel mit Clair«. The focus of his theater scripts is always on the hidden and subtly observed communication difficulties in modern big city life (from: Schauspiel Leipzig, season programme 2002/03, p. 27).
Enrico Lübbe, born in Schwerin in 1975, has been the resident theater director at the Schauspiel Leipzig since the 2000/01 season. He's interested in the atmospheric density and the well-observed mesh of relations within the piece which first appeared under the original title of »The Country« in London in 2000 and has already been performed a few times for German-speaking audiences.
Premiere: 20.09.2002, Leipzig
