The art action by the female punk band Pussy Riot in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in February 2012 caused a sensation. Nearly 100 years earlier, the ballet »Le sacre du printemps« (»The rite of spring«) by Igor Stravinsky received its world premiere in Paris in 1913 and became a scandal with its modernity. The choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, 24 years old at the time of the premiere, was of a similar age as the women involved in the punk protest in Moscow, who were brought before a judge and sentenced.
»DeSacre!« is a dance performance with commentary, a kind of lecture with practical examples. Christine Gaigg deals with sacrilege, art and blasphemy. In doing so, she ties scenes from the art action of Pussy Riot thematically with excerpts from the original choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky. The coming together of these two events should illuminate both the works as well as the socio-political contexts.
Christine Gaigg, born in 1960 in Linz, studied dance and choreography in Amsterdam as well as philosophy and linguistics in Vienna. As a freelance choreographer and dancer, she often collaborates with composers of new music. In 2007, she directed the Swiss premiere of »Über Tiere« (»About animals«) by Elfriede Jelinek for Festspiele Zürich and opened the festival steirischer herbst in Graz in 2010 with »Maschinenhalle#1«.
