Understanding beyond all stereotypes and ethnic clichés, an unconditional togetherness – this is the desire of most artists inside and outside of the European Union. The countries on the edges are also a part of Europe as many of their cultural roots are found here and all of these differences enrich the European community. Building upon the metaphorical festival motto »Black milk« and the poem »Todesfuge« (»Death fugue«) from 1944/1945 by the German-Romanian lyric poet Paul Celan, the differences and similarities in the life and work of artists, e.g., from the Balkans, will be discussed. Culture allows hopelessness and fear to transcend to the principle of hope, to become a strategy for survival and matters of the heart.
