A person moves outside of the world, half bird, half man. He fights against the obstacles that beset him and only perseveres with a great deal of effort. Full of loneliness he freezes, in a place where he seems to be the only survivor. There is no more society in this space, only physical struggle and emptiness.
A book, forgotten knowledge. Like long-lost myths, the records of the ancestors rise. Like the old, lonely King Marke who had to give his wife Isolde to another, Tristan, the bird creature struggles to raise itself above the tendrils of popular fables. It attempts to build a platform to the collective being and overcome its shadow existence. The impulse for the dance solo »The old king« was a photograph of the Portuguese photographer Daniel Blaufuks. It pictures a peculiar lonely man, smoking, in fog, with a book on his lap.
Romeo Runa, born in 1978 in Cova da Piedade / Portugal, is an outstanding dancer and has performed in multiple pieces by the famous choreographer Alain Platel. Miguel Moreira was born in 1973 in Mozambique, trained at the circus school Chapitô in Lisbon and has directed various shows. Company les ballets C de la B, founded by Alain Platel in 1984 in Ghent, has also developed into a platform for young choreographers over the years.
