Rechnitz is the name of a small town on the Austro-Hungarian border. It has become a metaphor for Austria’s sloppy treatment of its national socialist past. With the use of interviews, Austrian directors Margareta Heinrich and Eduard Erne attempt to approach to the circumstances of the massacre in Rechnitz in 1945. During a so-called SS evening at the castle of the duchess Batthyány, born Thyssen-Bornemisza, in Rechnitz / Austria, more than 180 Hungarian Jews were murdered. The film shows a failed search for the mass grave and the silence of the village population that has persisted for decades. It has been shown at many international festivals and inspired Elfriede Jelinek to write her play »Rechnitz (The exterminating angel)«.
