This surreal parable involves a dinner party whose guests can no longer leave the room for inexplicable reasons. Days pass, the people become nervous and hysterical. Food and water run out. One of the guest dies, a young couple commits suicide. While they ultimately escape, the game continues in the church during the service of thanksgiving.
Luis Buñuel Portolés (1900-83) from Spain was certainly one of the most important film directors of the 20th century. His central themes were surrealistic day dreams, the smug bourgeoisie and criticism of the state and church. He collaborated with Salvador Dalí multiple times. The title and atmosphere of the outstanding film »The exterminating angel« influenced Elfriede Jelinek in her play »Rechnitz (Der Würgeengel)«.
